Vitrified Bond Grinding Wheels for PCD and PcBN
PCD is hard - very hard. If you want to grind PCD tools then you need high-quality vitrified bond wheels from Trochilics Ltd - the sister company of Coborn Engineering.
Coborn has over 60 years’ experience in machines for cutting, polishing and grinding diamond, PCD, CVD and PcBN ultra-hard materials so they know what they are talking about.
If a diamond wheel is to grind PCD it must be kept ‘open’ by frequent dressing. This exposes new sharp diamond and keeps the wheel cutting freely. A dull wheel can soon start to vibrate or ‘chatter’ especially if the machine is not rigid. Wheel, machine and PCD all interact. Soft wheels will grind easily but then the life will be low. A hard wheel may not suit your machine. A few experiments are needed.
Trochilics Ltd offers 5 vitrified bond formulations with varying degrees of hardness and diamond concentration. The OLIVE bond is a universal, general-purpose bond recommended for manual machines: the KILO bond is designed to give very consistent results on CNC machines.
All wheels are dynamically balanced. The standard wheels are held ex-stock in the UK, ready for immediate shipment.

BOND TYPE – OLIVE 2
Characteristics
Hardness Index: 100 | Concentration: 75
This is the hardest wheel grade. It is especially suited for the surface grinding of PcBN tools with narrow wheels into blind corners. The hard bond means it wears uniformly.
BOND TYPE – OLIVE 4V
Characteristics
Hardness Index: 90 | Concentration: 100
The bond is grey in colour and gives a very good compromise between the need for dressing and long life. This wheel is the best wheel to start using first.
BOND TYPE – OLIVE 2.5W
Characteristics
Hardness Index: 60 | Concentration: 125
The body is grey/white in colour. Like the Olive 4C it is very popular for PCD grinding.
BOND TYPE – OLIVE 2.5Y
Characteristics
Hardness Index: 70 | Concentration: 150
The bond is white in colour. The high concentration means a rigid RG type machine is required but wheel lives can then be extended.
BOND TYPE – COBO
Characteristics
Hardness Index: L/N | Concentration: 160
The bond is grey in colour. The high concentration means a rigid RG type machine is required but wheel lives can then be extended.
BOND TYPE – KILO
Characteristics
Hardness Index: 55 | Concentration: 125
These wheels are recommended for CNC PCD grinding machines such as the RG6, RG8 and RG9. They have a very consistent structure and are essentially self-dressing. It is softer, if you will, than the Dools bond and faster cutting. This is usually the best first choice when defining customers'
needs.
BOND TYPE – DOOLS
Characteristics
Hardness Index: 70 | Concentration: 125
These wheels are harder and denser than the Kilo wheels so are used where longevity is important asthey are less porous but will yield longer life. They can be used with coarser grits as well as fine grits. This wheel is also recommended for CNC PCD grinding machines such as the RG6, RG8
and RG9.
BOND TYPE – MAX
Characteristics
Hardness Index: 55 | Concentration: 125
These wheels have an Engineered Controlled Structure Vitrified Bond with Lubricity induced within the Bond Structure which reduces heat while grinding which results in lower grinding force, produces superior edge quality, increases stock removal, increases wheel life and reduces Stick dressing.
These have extruded Aluminium Cores which are CNC turned for extreme consistency. Also they have a 12mm depth of usable diamond surface. This wheel again is also recommended for CNC PCD grinding machines such as the RG6, RG8 and RG9.
